Documented ground conditions
SRK Consulting engineers, writing in 2025, name the West Rand among the parts of Gauteng underlain by dolomite where developments have been troubled by subsidence and sinkholes, and they point out that concentrated water causes internal erosion in that ground. Research on Gauteng's dolomitic land estimates that dolomite covers about 14% of the province's surface and that dolomitic land, including dolomite at depth, covers about 24%.
In July 2026 the Mail and Guardian reported residents of Wilfordon Extension 11 in Roodepoort describing cracks, rising damp and sinkholes, with one saying that even newly laid paving had started shifting. The City said it was investigating, and the developer disputed the extent of the problems.

What that means for paving
Not every Roodepoort property is on dolomite or undermined land, and most paving jobs here are ordinary. But on this side of the city, it is worth asking whether your stand has a geotechnical or dolomite stability classification, and making sure the paving design does not concentrate storm water in one place. A contractor who asks these questions is doing the job properly.
