Driveway paving in Johannesburg
A new driveway, a replacement for a tired one, or a relay of paving that has sunk. Tell us about it and we connect you with paving contractors who cover your suburb. They measure and quote you directly.
A driveway is the hardest-working paving you own
A driveway carries the weight of every car that turns on it, every delivery truck that reverses up it and every summer storm that runs down it. That is why most driveway failures are not about the blocks on top. They are about what is underneath: the depth and quality of the sub-base, how well it was compacted, whether the edges are held in place, and where the water goes.
In Johannesburg those questions matter more than usual. Much of the northern suburbs sits on weathered granite, and South African engineers have described collapsible residual granite soils in southern Africa since the early 1960s. Clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry is common elsewhere. And most of the year's rain arrives in short, heavy summer thunderstorms. A driveway built for those conditions lasts. One that is not can sink, rut or lift within a few rainy seasons.
What is involved in a new driveway
Contractors differ in the detail, but a properly built paved driveway usually goes through the same stages. Ask each contractor to describe them on the quote so that you can compare like with like.
- Site check and measure. Area, levels, slope, where water runs now, access for machines and trucks, and what is under the old surface.
- Removal and excavation. Lifting old paving, concrete or tar, digging out to the depth the design needs, and carting the spoil away.
- Sub-base. Laying and compacting a load-bearing layer in stages. This is the part you cannot see later and the part most often skimped.
- Falls and drainage. Shaping the surface so water runs away from the house and off the paving, with channel drains where a slope or a garage door needs them.
- Edge restraint. Kerbs or a concrete haunch along the edges so the paving cannot creep outwards.
- Bedding, laying and jointing. A screeded sand bed, the pavers in the chosen pattern, cutting at the edges, compaction and joint sand.
Relay or rebuild?
If your driveway has sunk in patches but the blocks themselves are sound, a relay may be enough: lift the blocks, fix the base where it failed, re-bed and re-lay the same pavers. If the whole surface is rutted, the base has failed across the drive or the pavers are crumbling, a rebuild is usually the honest answer. A good contractor will tell you which you need and why. Our paving repairs and relay page covers the repair side.
Choosing the paver
Concrete pavers, clay brick pavers and cobbles all make good driveways when the base is right. They differ in look, colour-fastness, cost and how they age. Interlocking concrete shapes are often chosen for heavy, turning traffic. Our block, clay and cobble paving page and the guide to block versus clay versus concrete explain the trade-offs. For the pattern itself, see paving design and layout.
What drives the cost
The contractor quotes you once they have measured the job. These are the factors that usually make the difference:
- The area in square metres, and how many awkward cuts the shape needs.
- What has to come out first: old paving, concrete or tar, and how much spoil must be carted away.
- The ground: weak, wet or collapsible soil may need deeper excavation or improved fill.
- Slope and drainage: steep drives need careful falls and often channel drains.
- The paver you choose and the pattern: herringbone and borders take more labour than a simple bond.
- Kerbing or haunching along the edges, and access for trucks and compaction machines.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a new paved driveway take?
It depends on the size, the ground and the weather. A contractor can give you a realistic timeline after seeing the site. Heavy rain stops base work, so summer jobs can take longer than winter ones.
Is winter a good time to pave in Johannesburg?
Often, yes. Johannesburg's rain falls mostly from October to March, and the winter months are much drier, which suits base preparation. Contractors can be busier then, so plan early.
Can I use my driveway straight away?
Ask your contractor. Block paving is usually usable soon after compaction and jointing, but the contractor should tell you when it is safe for cars and heavy vehicles.
Do you lay the driveway?
No. We are a website that connects you with paving contractors who cover your area. The contractor quotes you, does the work and is responsible for it.
