Ground and housing
This band of suburbs sits along the southern edge of the Johannesburg granite dome. Northcliff stands out because its ridge is not granite at all: a University of Pretoria study describes the Northcliff Promontory as a ridge of West Rand Group rocks, the hard quartzites and shales that form many of Johannesburg's ridges. Closer to Rosebank, the Braamfontein Spruit runs through Parkhurst.
Much of the housing here is older, and so is the paving. Many driveway enquiries in these suburbs are about relay or replacement rather than paving for the first time. Contractors also often describe Johannesburg's clay-heavy soils, which swell and shrink with the seasons, as a common reason for paving to shift.
