Paving cleaning and sealing in Johannesburg
A maintenance service for paving that is sound but dirty, stained, weedy or faded. It is different from new paving or repairs, and we keep it separate.
A different job from paving
Cleaning and sealing does not fix a sunken driveway or a failed base. It looks after paving that is structurally fine. If your paving is rocking, sinking or lifting, you need a repair or relay first. Cleaning a failing driveway only makes the failure easier to see.
What the service usually includes
- Pressure cleaning. Removing dirt, algae, moss and some stains. Too much pressure can blow the sand out of the joints, so the joints usually need refilling afterwards.
- Weed and moss treatment. Removing growth from joints and treating it so it is slower to return.
- Re-sanding the joints. Brushing kiln-dried or jointing sand back into the joints so the blocks lock together again.
- Sealing. A sealer can reduce staining and weed growth and refresh colour. Ask what type of sealer, how long it is expected to last, and how it looks when wet.
- Oil and rust stains. Specific cleaners may help. Some stains never come out completely.
Is sealing worth it?
It depends on the paving and how it is used. Sealing can make cleaning easier and keep colours looking fresher, and some contractors recommend sealing new paving after it has settled. It also needs re-doing from time to time, and a poorly applied sealer can look patchy or become slippery. Ask the contractor to explain the benefit for your specific paving rather than sealing by default.
When to do it
Sealers need a dry surface, so the dry winter months in Johannesburg, roughly April to August, generally suit sealing better than the summer storm season. Cleaning can be done any time, but joints refilled just before heavy rain may wash out again.
What drives the cost
The contractor quotes you once they have measured the job. These are the factors that usually make the difference:
- The area and how dirty or stained it is.
- Whether the joints need full re-sanding.
- The type of sealer and the number of coats.
- Specific stain treatments for oil, rust or paint.
- Access and water supply on site.

Frequently asked questions
Will pressure cleaning damage my paving?
Too much pressure close to the surface can wash out joint sand and mark softer pavers. A careful contractor adjusts pressure and refills the joints afterwards.
How often should paving be sealed?
It depends on the sealer and the traffic. Ask your contractor what to expect for the product they use.
Can sealing fix sunken paving?
No. Sealing is cosmetic and protective. Sunken or lifting paving needs a repair or relay.
