Patio, walkway and pool surround paving in Johannesburg
Entertainment patios, paths through the garden and the paving around a pool. These areas carry feet, not cars, but they bring their own questions about heat, slip and water.
Paving you live on
A patio is part of the house in a Johannesburg summer. It is where the braai is, where people sit in the evening and where children run in from the pool. That changes what matters. Load is light, so you can use thinner pavers, slabs and natural stone. But the surface must be comfortable underfoot, safe when wet, and laid so that the afternoon thunderstorm drains away from the house rather than towards the doors.
Around a pool
Pool surrounds need special thought:
- Slip. Wet feet and smooth surfaces are a bad combination. Ask about the texture and finish of the paver or stone before you choose it.
- Heat. Dark surfaces in full sun get hot to walk on. Lighter colours and some natural stones stay cooler.
- Chemicals and splash. Pool water carries chlorine or salt. Ask whether the paver and any sealer suit a pool surround.
- Falls. Water must run away from the pool and the house, not back into the pool and not into the pool's own paving bed.
- Coping. The edge of the pool is often a separate coping stone or bullnose. Decide early whether the paving contractor or a pool contractor handles it.
Walkways and garden paths
Paths are usually the cheapest paving per job, and the one where design makes the most difference. A path that follows where people actually walk gets used; one that does not gets a worn track of grass beside it. Stepping stones, narrow paver paths and full-width walkways all have their place. Where a path crosses a slope, steps or a gentle ramp may be needed, and that is where good base work matters most.
Bundling with a driveway
Many Johannesburg homeowners pave a patio or path at the same time as a driveway. Doing it in one job can save on delivery and set-up, and it lets you match or deliberately contrast the materials. Mention all the areas when you send your job, so contractors can quote them together. Our driveway paving page covers the vehicle areas.
What drives the cost
The contractor quotes you once they have measured the job. These are the factors that usually make the difference:
- Area and shape: curves, steps and levels add cutting and labour.
- The material: concrete pavers, clay, slabs or natural stone.
- Raised patios on a slope may need a retaining wall or steps.
- Pool coping and bullnose edges, and who supplies them.
- Drainage near the house and the pool.
- Built-in features such as braai areas, seating walls or lighting.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best paving around a pool?
One that is slip-resistant when wet, comfortable in sun, and suitable for pool water. Ask the contractor to show you the product's finish and explain why it suits a pool.
Do I need a big base for a patio?
Less than for a driveway, because there is no vehicle load. But it still needs a compacted base, edge restraint and falls, or it will settle unevenly.
Can a patio be paved over old concrete?
Sometimes, if the concrete is sound and the new levels work at the doors. A contractor needs to see it to say.
