Dolomite on the West Rand

SRK Consulting engineers, writing in 2025, name the West Rand among the parts of Gauteng underlain by dolomite where developments have been affected by subsidence and sinkholes. They explain that concentrated water causes internal erosion in that ground. Research published in the Journal of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering estimates that dolomite covers about 14% of Gauteng's surface, and that dolomitic land, including dolomite at depth, covers about 24%.

Reported problems in a Roodepoort development

In July 2026 the Mail and Guardian reported residents of Wilfordon Extension 11 in Roodepoort describing cracks, rising damp and sinkholes, including newly laid paving that had started to shift. The City said it was investigating, and the developer disputed the extent of the problems. We cite it as a news report, not as a finding about any other property.

What that means for your paving

  • Ask whether your stand has a geotechnical report or a dolomite stability classification.
  • Make sure the paving design spreads storm water and sends it to the street or a proper drain, not into one corner.
  • Fix leaking pipes and gutters that discharge onto paving before laying new paving.
  • If paving keeps sinking in one spot, have the cause investigated rather than just relaid.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Roodepoort house on dolomite?

We cannot tell you. The stand's geotechnical report or dolomite stability classification can. Ask the municipality, the developer or a geotechnical engineer.

Does dolomite mean I cannot pave?

No. It means drainage and water management deserve extra care, because concentrated water is a known trigger on dolomitic ground.
